Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. was an American physician, poet, essayist, and professor of anatomy and physiology at Harvard. A central figure among the nineteenth-century Boston writers, he is especially remembered for The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table and for his conversational essays and verse.
