About the author

John Jay Chapman was an American essayist and critic. He wrote on literature, education, religion, and politics. Referring to Chapman, Jacques Barzun wrote: “In his fiery incompleteness and buffeted integrity he looks like some of his predecessors from Poe to Melville and the elder Henry James, or like his contemporaries Adams and Mencken; he looks, in short, like the American as Critic.”
